Pit bulls are an extraordinary breeds of dog, the pit bull breed includes the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and any cross between the three.

Pit Bulls are extremely loyal and affectionate family pets that are good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, the pit bull is very eager to please its master. Pit bulls can be extremely courageous and intelligent guard dogs that are full of vitality. Highly protective of their owners and their property, they will fight an enemy to the death. Pit Bulls are usually very friendly, but have an uncanny ability to know when they need to protect and when everything is okay.

Pit bulls, in many cases suffer at the hands of irresponsible owners drawn to their strength and image who encourage aggression for fighting and protection.

Indeed, the ASPCA web site gives the breed a stellar endorsement. It says, “A well-socialized and well-trained pit bull is one of the most delightful, intelligent, and gentle dogs imaginable.”

In general, pit bulls aren’t aggressive with people but are “less tolerant” of other dogs than many other breeds, says Pamela Reid, PhD, vice president of the ASPCA’s Animal Behavior Center in New York. They also have “great tenacity. They put their mind to something, and they do it.

It is reported on temperament tests conducted by the American Temperament Test Society the American Pit Bull Terrier has a passing rate of 86.8% -- compared to only 77% of the general dog population.
